The state of Rajasthan is located in the northwestern part of India. It covers an area of 342,239 square kilometers or 10.4 percent of the total geographical area of India. It is the largest state in India by area. Rajasthan is bounded by the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Sindh to the northwest, by the state of Gujarat to the southwest, by Madhya Pradesh to the southeast, and by Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to the northeast. The state of Rajasthan has a population of 68,548,437 as per the 2011 census. The area now known as Rajasthan was formerly a part of several different kingdoms and princely states. These include the Maurya Empire, the Gupta Empire, the Empire of Harsha, the Vakataka dynasty, the Chalukya dynasty, the Rashtrakuta dynasty, the Pala Empire, the Chauhan dynasty, the Solanki dynasty, the Paramara dynasty, the Pratihara dynasty, the Chauhan dynasty (again), the Guhila (or Gehlot) dynasty, and finally the Rajputana Agency under the British Raj.
